The General — Chicago

Adding ultra-contemporary fenestration to a historic façade can be a tricky design challenge. Especially in Chicago, many architects and building owners want to create something that will blend seamlessly into the existing streetscape… without sacrificing the energy efficiency and sleek functionality of modern products.

Fortunately for all of us that like to mix the old with the new, LaCantina Doors are available in a wide range of finishes. For this project in Logan Square, we provided a set of bi-folding wood windows that were stained and treated to match the vintage Wild West aesthetic of the restaurant’s décor. When closed, they look right at home on this early 1900s storefront! Yet the space also benefits from the ability to fold them off to the side in warm summer weather. After all, who doesn’t like a gentle evening breeze with their meal?

Though the original tenant of this bar & grill space closed down, we know it won’t be long before it’s repurposed. With a location close to the CTA Blue Line — and these awesome multipurpose windows already installed — this property is a seriously desirable commercial opportunity!
