New construction… old world aesthetic. We love it! A few years ago we lent our masonry expertise to the renovation of this small commercial building along Armitage Avenue in Lincoln Park. Part of the Armitage-Halsted Chicago landmark district, this area of Chicago contains a beautiful assortment of 19th century neighborhood architecture that transports visitors back to the shopping streetscapes of a bygone era.
The three-story development contains a ground-level retail storefront for Marine Layer, with two stories of luxury residential units above. Majorly improving upon the concrete/siding situation that existed previously, the new facade features long format (2-1/4″ x 16″) Watsontown Brick in a smooth grey color from their “Manhattan Series.” Ample vintage brick detailing — including stack bond corners and piers, brick corbeling at the cornice, and protruding headers framing the windows — artfully incorporates the property in among its historic neighbors.
