Greenwood American Kitchen – Highwood, IL

Just a few years ago, we had the honor of working on Greenwood American Kitchen & Bar, a remarkable restaurant & bar operation in Highwood, Illinois. DMAC Architecture came up with a truly ingenious adaptive reuse design for this former auto repair shop, which resulted in a downright jaw-dropping transformation of the space!

Wanting to preserve a touch of the building’s industrial heritage, the architects chose to integrate several sets of bifolding LaCantina Doors into the large garage door openings original to the structure. New additions were built onto the southern and eastern elevations, including a glass-encased lounge adjacent to the town’s bustling commercial strip along Green Bay Road. LaCantina’s “Zero Post” system allows the patio doors of this cozy dining area to fully retract around a 90 degree angle, opening it completely up to the hedge-lined terrace.

In addition to the architectural makeover of the first-floor space, the second-floor was converted into sleek, modern offices — now home to Raden Wellness. We love the way this thoughtful renovation completely overhauled this once-dreary suburban intersection, creating a buzzing center of shopping and dining just steps from the Metra station!
